The right peat for each purpose

Vapo’s peat products are suitable for a wide variety of purposes. The best – and most economical – result is obtained when precisely the right peat is used for each purpose.

When choosing which type of peat to use, the degree of humification and humidity are generally the key factors.  

The least humified is light-coloured sphagnum peat, which thanks to its porous, airy composition is able to bind 500-800 litres of liquid per cubic metre. It also effective at binding nutrients such as ammonium, potassium, calcium and magnesium ions and, thanks to its natural acidity, gases such as ammonia and hydrogen sulphide.

Dark, well humified peat, on the other hand, contains slowly decomposing organic matter, humus, which has long-lasting soil improvement benefits. Organic peat boosts and maintains the soil’s bio-activity, facilitates stronger growth, improves soil structure and protects the ground against compaction and siltation.
